Did you catch the Great British Sewing Bee last night? We thoroughly enjoyed it, especially as it was children’s’ week!

We really enjoyed watching them create those made to measure dance costumes, they were fantastic!. In honour of the awesome contestants, we have put together some PDF sewing patterns you can try at home. Scroll down for an exclusive free ruffle skirt pattern!

If you’re feeling inspired give these patterns a go, they are all beginner sewing patterns and are instant download so you can get started straight away.

We lost count of the amount of circle skirts used last night! Circle skirts are a great choice for dance costume patterns because they have lots of swish & twirl.

We love our pattern in particular because it can be used with a huge variety of fabrics making this the perfect versatile dance skirt for your little girl.

Tulle, chiffon, sateen, chambray and jersey are just a few of the fabric options you can use for this circle skirt that would be perfect for a dance skirt costume.

You can find our Caitlin Circle Skirt here. Check it out as it is only $5.50 right now. It’s perfect as a beginners sewing project and it even includes a lesson on how to draft a circle skirt so you can make it the perfect length for your little one.

Ruffle Skirt

We adored Juliet’s Igbo Cultural Dance costume! The tulle and the sequins really made this dance skirt fabulous, the twirl factor here is so high. This is a great dancing skirt as it has lots of volume and can be made with a wide range of fabrics.

We have a free sewing course on how to create your own ruffle skirt over on our Academy where you can join here (it takes two mins). There are 3 options too, either ruffle, flamenco (!) or gypsy.

This is a perfect choice for a dance costume pattern as it has a stretch jersey waistband, making it super comfortable to wear.

Traditional Igbo Dance Costumes – so fabulous

Rosalie Peasant Top

We really loved the traditional dance costume patterns that were created on the sewing bee last night too. The Scottish Highlands dance & the Tarantella dance costumes both featured a gathered sleeve on the blouse.

The Rosalie Peasant Top PDF sewing pattern is a great option if you want to create your own tarantella dance costume. It can be made with a four way stretch fabric on the main body, making it perfect for dancing in. You can find it here.

It is a perfect beginner sewing project as it has sewing tutorials like how to sew a raglan cap puff sleeve, how to insert elasticated neckline and how to combine knit and woven fabrics.

The Rosalie featured here with our Caitlin Circle Skirt.

It features a gorgeous fathered yoke at the top too. This is a great introduction to knit fabrics if you haven’t worked with them before and it uses a small amount of fabric too so it’s perfect for using up fabric from your stash – we love a scrap buster!
